Broken Sword 2.5 Review after completing

Postby coal-goat » 30. September 2008, 21:19

Hey guys,

I downloaded the game on Sunday night, had a little problem with the game crashing when starting, but after a short conversation with a guy on irc, the problem was fixed (updated gfx driver). And so i began..

I loved the opening scene on the plane, with the guy snoring and farting, very amusing and with only 15 seconds into the game it already felt like a Broken Sword game. After leaving Nico's apartment, i was AMAZED to see how fresh & sharp the 2D graphics were, you have done such an amazing job with drawing and rendering the scenery. In my honest opinion it looked 10x better than the first 2 original games, it was beautiful to just look at.

Before i go any further, I am so pleased to see alot of small but very important details, like the birds in the sky, the black cat that runs into the alley near the cafe (possibly the black cat that jumps out of the bin down the alley in BS1 ?). and lots and lots of other small details that makes this game even more amazing.

The storyline was good, i dont think as good as BS1 or 2 due to the fact that Revolution Software make games for a living and have very talented story writers. but for a fan game it was very good and stayed true to the first 2 games. It was great to re-visit the same locations as the previous games with the better graphics, and also run into a few old characters from the first 2 games.

As much as i hate to say anything negative about the game, i think many people feel the same as me. The game was very short and i felt not hard enough. I didnt need any clues and strolled through the game without hardly any thinking. Most of the objects that George needed to progress in the game was so easy to find, usually right in front of your eyes. which was a little disappointing. I think the game could have been made longer without adding to the story if it was a little harder.

The best part of the game for me, was the effort you guys put into the game, its like you have taken the best parts from BS 1 & 2 and put them into 2.5.

The last thing i want to say is.. WE NEED ANOTHER BS GAME LIKE THIS !! Revolution Software have gone backwards since BS2 in my eyes, 2D Point & Click is what makes this game great and should not be changed ! I am hoping the people at Revolution Software listen to their fan's and stop with the 3D games, go back to the classic style and we will all be happy.

Is there any chance you will be making a sequel ? maybe Broken Sword 1.5 ? of what took place in between 1 & 2, or even Broken Sword 0.5 ? what happened before BS1... or even a totally new idea. either would be amazing.

Either way, this game was worth the wait (2 years for me) and whenever i play BS 1 & 2 again, i will play BS 2.5 straight after. I consider it a vital part of the series and will continue to play it many times in my life time (even more when the English language patch comes out :-)

Thank you all very much for making this game for free, it is a shame you are not allowed to make any money from these games as i am sure we would all donate to you to make another !!

last thing,, Congratulations on maybe the best Fan Game in the history of Gaming !!

Right, here we go!!!

Finished the game and i thought it was great, the graphics were spot on and it was enjoyable to see extra areas within ones from the old games (aka the tramp near mounfacon).

Another thing i think was well done was having little scenes like the carnival and the crazy hannibal lecter scenes which brake up the flow nicely.

I dont have many negatives but i thought bringing Khan back was a little wierd. The Henderson's cameo was fun though.

Little things like the bird flying overhead in the park were fantastic touches.

There were a few items that were never needed or action points that were never used (i spent a little time trying to interact with the paint in the pub to no avail!!!) however on the flip side of this i think having 'red herring' items is good for the gameplay, because it makes you think about what your doing rather than just clicking on all your items and hoping for the best!

I enjoyed seeing some of the old paris sites, except for Andre!

all in all this was a great game! and i loved the joke when george said he didnt enjoy pushing around boxes! a laugh out loud moment!!

Broken Sword Series Ratings....
Broken Sword 1 = 96%
Broken Sword 2 = 94%
Broken Sword 2.5 = 88%
Broken Sword 3 = 90%
Broken Sword 4 = 92%

A fantastic addition to the series!

Many Many congrats!!!!

Wopopop! Reading it, a idea comes through my head>> Broken Sword 0.5, which main character as... Kahn! As we learn in BS 2.5, Kahn was engaged as a mercenary by neo-Templars, maybe ......... [smilie=icon_cheesygrin.gif] [smilie=icon_cheesygrin.gif] ihihihi
xD

Or a BS 1, but this time on the side of Kahn. Wouldn't be a good idea?

I finished the game a few days ago, and I thought I should leave a commentary too, as I noticed some stuff...
First, the story is too vague, it doesn't explain how did the Templars manage to escape. I know adding The Grandmaster again would have been bullshit, as in BS 3 is clearly stated he never showed himself to George and Nico after Bannockburn, so I don't even suggest it. I don't understand how could Guido have escaped the Bannockburn explosion, as the bomb was right near him. The Kahn clishee was worthy to believe, though...
And, sincerely, I could not understand how did George get from the train to the pub. Another cutscene would have been of great help... or at least a comment of George explaining how he got there. You obviously weren't very careful when you played BS 1 (if you played it), because you made a mistake when you added Jimmy Mc Laugh as a character, as we know that he was ran over by a car driven by Kahn. Also, he lived in an Irish village, not in an estate in England. And I'm still not sure if Andre was helping the Templars or not... and if he was, why did Nico and George trust him in BS 3? One final thing and I'm getting to the good parts. The final cutscene, even though I know you're not professionals in creating 3D graphics, was a bit too... unreal. I mean, it didn't look well to me.
And now to the good parts: BS 2.5 is a combination between BS 1 and 2 as many people already stated. I liked the fact that you used backgrounds from the previous games too, it made it feel like a deja-vu. Also, I would like to congratulate the soundtrack composer, as he did a great job. And the 3D cutscenes were great (except the last one) too. I was disappointed by the fact that only a small part was playabile with Nico. It would have been better to play more as her... or even as Khan or Andre. It gets boring to play only as George.
Despite the +'s and -'s I stated above, and despite the graphic error that can be fixed by updating the drivers (and it works perfectly on Vista too), I'd give this game at least 9/10. You don't see a Broken Sword fan game everyday, do you?

Huh? [smilie=blink.gif] Jimmy McLaugh did not appear in BS 1 at any time. It is a character created by us. You probably mean Fitzgerald.

indeed a game on what happened leading up to broken sword 1 would be very interesting, and certainly vital to the broken sword series. i think this game would be amazing and already millions of ideas come to mind..

Imagine playing as kahn, and going to the costume shop to get the clowns uniform, face paint etc. what puzzles would he have to solve ? did he think he was doing the right thing at the time ? and then have the game end at the point of walking past george at the cafe and blowing it up.

Broken Sword 0.5 - The Chronicles of Kahn would be a great name :-)

i dont think playing as andre is too important, as the character is not so liked. but to play as Kahn, Nico and of course George.. would be very fun.

Sorry about the McLaugh - Fitzgerald confusion... the problem is the characters look similar to each other. Makes me think that you may have ”stolen” it from BS 1.
Also, at some point there was a release date contest on the site, and you said the prize would be an appearance in BS 2.5. If there was such an appearance, which character is it?
